Maps

According to Google maps - the 6 miles from my house by car will take 24 minutes, not taking into account the usual road works that you tend to find on the M11 plus the rush hour traffic....if I were to walk the same distance it would take me well over 2 hours going via a different route, having taken just over 2 hours to walk from the Town centre of an evening after missing my last bus and my refusal to pay £15 for a Taxi.

I very rarely travel from home to the Medical Library, apart from the odd occasion when I've worked on a Sunday....My usual route to the Medical Library is from Grange Road, this route is slightly quicker...

Youtube and Goodle videos

I must admit, You Tube is very popular with myself and the children in our home, I normally use it mainly to watch old songs from years gone by on Top of the Pops and various clips from old programmes from my youth. I followed the instructions and went to Youtube education's Health and medicine section, and picked a very informative section on diabete's, as my daughter had been diagnosed with the condition just before Christmas, as I don't tend to get too involved in the injecting and diet myself being at work most of the time, and as we've also introduced the carb counting to meal times when we have to weigh each item of food so she has enough carbs etc - the healthy diet video I found on youtube was very interesting and helped alot with understanding a diebetic's diet.

Staying with youtube and the my main use of watching videso, I've gone down memory lane with Mud's appearance on Top of the Pops with Tigerfeet, a great song and some great dancing...In this day and age of all these covers....No one's attempted to cover this classic....I wonder why not.

I hadn't used Google videos before, but it seem very straight forward, just an initial problem when embedding the video, but I sorted it out, although most youtube videos came up when I went through Google videos, but I did find a variety of other options and using the video from sciencestage.com and found this useful information on Diabetes stage 1 (insulin dependent) which is what Beth is diagnosed with.

What is Type 1 Diabetes?>

All in all using Youtube and Google videos, I've found them very informative weither I'm using the Cambridge University Channel, Health & Medicine, or just for my own enjoyment, this exercise has been very useful.

You Tube - Lego

I seem to be getting the hang of this now, I've completed this task without any problem at all, above is the You Tube video I've embedded in my blog, A family connection, my 13 year old son Sam has been doing some stop-gap animation in his bedroom, and with his lego collection has created a scene of Batman/Spiderman and the Bank Job, without sound, and posted it on You Tube, I was very impressed with the finished article and the time it took, sam has been continuing to enjoy doing it, so hopefully he can progress to bigger and better things, after all - I'm sure thats how Nick Park started.

iPod Touch and Wireless

I had a couple of teething problems to start with, but then went very smoothly, first I had ago on a borrowed Laptop, not being that familiar with laptops, it took me a while to get used to it, I've been using a mouse for too long, but managed to get my account details in and access the Library homepage etc.
Onto the more familiar iPod touch, I owned one of these, basically for my vast amount of tunes I own, but on this occasion left it at home so used the Library's iPod touch, although I use the music and videos side a great deal, I've never used the internet on it, so, I gave it ago, it did take a while to enter details to get onto libair, but I blame my fat fingers for that, the same fingers I tend to have trouble with using my Blackberry, so am familar with the internet on the go via my Blackberry, but using the internet on the iPod Touch excellent and the map page was a great idea, especially for someone who's always getting lost when they're out in the Car.

Wikis

Like others, I thought this was a great idea, especially for Groups of Students collaborating on papers etc. or Committee agendas, it would come in very handy with Cubs and relaying and getting information and feedback between leaders and parents.

Google docs

Well Google docs was pretty easy to start with...then the decision of what to write .....so went with my love of Music and the Beatles and so picked a famous quote from John Lennon.....the Spell check highlighted the Beatle word, I assume because it is a different spelling from the other Beetle

My Delicious Bookmarks

Taking advantage of Voyager being down, I thought I could try and catch up...A wide range of Bookmarks from 23things through my enjoyment of the works of Charles Dickens, and my knowledge of pop musical to help with my quizes and Dreamweaver to help me in my role of Webmaster for the Hardwick Scout Group website, and onto the massive hype that is the Vuvuzela that's taking control of the World Cup....love them or hate them, how long will it be before they will be heard across the World at every Football Ground this coming Season.

Google Reader

Here is my Google Reader, once again, Google Reader and RSS feeds are both new to me, but once I eventually started I really enjoyed creating feeds for all the sites that I am interested in, and great to be able to get all the updates from the BBC news and the World Cup straight away, the easiest and fasting way to get the feeds is through the orange button, but wasn't expecting to find an orange button on the Scouting websites I'm interested in, so is was back to copying and pasting which isn't a problem.

Playing catch-up already, here's my iGoogle home page - a nice beach view for relaxation....Sports gadget...including the World Cup and World Cup Countdown which is getting closer and closer, a Flixter movies gadget and You tube....plus my pet Hamster exercising on his wheel...

From Me to You

A favourite hobby of mine is listening to Music, and being a 60's child, the 70's and 80's were great decades for pop music....well for me anyway, thats why Programmes like 'Life on Mars' and 'Ashes to Ashes' bring back such great memories for me of growing up, but like so many others - The Beatles were such a great influence on my Music taste - not an influence that brought me to playing an instrument, or singing - apart from miming a recorder at my Primary School or singing Kareoke, thats not where my talent lies, it's the knowledge of Music, I compile my own Music Quizes to raise money for Charity, and also love taking part in them too...but for me the Beatles were such a great Band and there's still Bands of today that use the Beatles as their influences, and they get covered so regularly...My first link, is a blog that quotes 10 Beatles covers that are better than the original...for me thats impossible, and Joe Cocker's version of 'A little help from my friends' aside, I haven't heard the others, so look forward to giving my own un-biased views http://thedeletebin.com/2008/05/13/10-beatles-cover-songs-which-may-be-better-than-the-original/
I did go to the Beatles story a few years back in Liverpool, and thoughly enjoyed it, but felt I was rushed a little by my 11 year old son, who, although listens to them with me at home, did seem quite keen to rush through the Museum etc to get to MacDonalds, but would very much like to return for a more indepth look at the Museum aswell as the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour that Liverpool offer http://www.beatlesstory.com/

My very First Blog

Well, here it is...my first ever Blog.
I must admit, I wasn't sure about taking part in 23 things when I was first asked, but with an excellent explanation I decided to have a go.....and 2 weeks in, I'm really enjoying it, I think alot of the 23 things will be very useful to me, both at the Medical Library and at the UL, I'd be interested in the iGoogle, wikis and RSS and I'm looking forward to week 9, with you tube and podcasts...

With the UL starting their 23 Things starting on Monday, with a variety of different Things, I'd be happy to have a go at their 23 Things too.
